What we do...
Under Vermont’s Emergency Management department (VEM), the state is divided into 13 Local Emergency Planning regions. Shoreham falls under LEPC#8, Addison County. The VEM, in turn, is under FEMA.
Shoreham’s EMC is charged, by State Statute, with developing an Emergency Operation Planto “mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from” any emergency affecting the town. Because of the rural nature of our town, its wide-spread population, and the attendant difficulties of goods/services transport in an extreme event (particularly in the winter!). Our focus is on the Town Emergency Operations Plan, and on encouraging individual/family preparedness as a personal responsibility of each resident.
Like Being in The Loop?
We've set up several ways by which we can notify you of emergency events and updates. To be on the EmailALert list, the SMS, or if you're interested in being called for a check-in during an event that's got us socked in, use the links in the right column. To sign up for emergency event check-in calls you can also call the Town Clerk at 897-5841 and leave your name and number with her. If you prefer Twitter or Facebook, check us out at our Twitter and Facebook accounts. And, you can check for updates on the 211 system by dialing 2-1-1 and asking about updates for Shoreham.

You’re on Your Own
In an extreme weather or other type of widespread emergency, it will likely be 72 hours before help arrives. Rather than focusing on the gathering of residents in a central location in an emergency event, emphasis is on helping residents plan for remaining at home for the duration of the event.
Responsibility falls on the shoulders of each town resident to prepare for their own and their family’s survival. The Shoreham EMC will supply the information needed for each of us to do that. The committee is also charged with identifying local resources which may be marshalled in an emergency in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
Basics
- Dial 2-1-1, check on Facebook or Twitter to find out if there is a current update for Shoreham
- Stock up on, and rotate, a supply of water and canned food
- Try to keep an extra supply of medical needs on-hand
- Make a plan for emergencies
Town "Basic Emergency Operations Plan"
The "BEOP" is a list of resources and event management forms and processes that is brought into play at the discretion of the EMC after discussion with the Selectboard. The full plan consists of the BEOP portion (basically an "outline" of the complete Emergency Operations Plan), 14 or 15 support sections each covering a specific function, plus various operating guidelines, and in-depth info. The 14/15 "Support Function" sections are an on-going project, the entire document is reviewed annually; an abbreviated version can be downloaded here [PDF].
