Town of Shoreham
GOVERNMENT
The Town of Shoreham is governed by a five-member Selectboard,
which has general supervision and control over the affairs of the town.
The Selectboard performs three functions: legislative (enacts
local ordinances, regulations, and policies); administrative (prepares
and presents the budget, oversees all town expenditures, supervises personnel,
and controls town buildings and property); and quasi-judicial (determines
rights in such areas as laying out, discontinuing, and reclassifying
highways, and hearing appeals as the local board of health and as the
local liquor control commission).
There are about 68 elected and appointed officers in Shoreham. Most slots
must be filled by law. Some positions require a lot of time and energy, and
some act only infrequently. Most are unpaid. Residents are encouraged to
run for any position. Being a town officer is a great way to meet neighbors
and to contribute and participate in our Town. Elections are held each year
at Town Meeting, the first Tuesday of March. Candidates must get a petition
from the Town Clerk early in the year and submit it by the 6th Monday before
Town Meeting to be on the ballot. The Town Clerk (address
at bottom of page) can provide information on terms and specifications of offices
open in the upcoming election.
